When you live this close to Fort Peck Lake, it comes as no surprise that the vast reservoir enjoys nation-wide recognition as a hot spot for walleye fishing. Fort Peck kicks out 10-pounders for fishermen at a rate that most other places can only dream about.
But Fort Peck is more than just walleyes. It offers excellent fishing for world-class sauger, northern pike, lake trout, Chinook salmon and smallmouth bass. The lake and Missouri River system below Fort Peck Dam are home to 87 different species of fish, ranging from minnows to 100-pound-plus paddlefish. The river below Fort Peck Dam also offers a little-known fishery for huge rainbow trout.
Fort Peck Lake is 134 miles long at full pool, has a maximum depth of 220 feet and has 1,520 miles of shoreline -- more miles of shoreline than the Pacific coastline of California. If you don't have a boat of your own, guide services are available and we can help you with that.
The best times for walleye fishing stretch from mid-May into August. Walleyes turn on earliest on the Big Dry Arm and the late bite is best in the dam area of the lake. Lake trout fishing is good throughout the year. In some years, there is a good bite on Chinook salmon that develops in late July or early August and continues into fall.
